The Delhi Police, on the 19th of November, registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students who are protesting against the authorities of the University.

It has been a week since the JNU students staged a protest against a 300 % hike in hostel fee.

The Delhi Police deployed a huge force to control the situation, used water cannons and carried out lathi charges against the students, but it was in vain.  The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) decided not to step back until the management agrees to meet the JNUSU and agree to revise the hostel fee.

As per latest updates, the Delhi Police registered a case against the JNUSU and the students protesting outside the University for violating Section 144, under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

The Delhi Police imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the nearby areas of JNU.  Section 144 restricts people from conducting any kind of protests, strikes and public gatherings.

The JNUSU, on the 18th of November, even carried out a massive march to the Parliament, where the Winter Session of the Parliament began.

A leader of the JNUSU said, “It’s a way to appeal to lawmakers to fight on their behalf inside the floor of the house.”

The students even broke police barricades and tried to enter the Parliament, which left 30 police personnel and 15 students injured.  As many as 100 students were arrested by the Delhi Police, following which the remaining students sat on a dharna at the Safdarjung Tomb and demanded the release of the detained students and urged the Human Resource and Development (HRD) Ministry officials to meet them.

Due to the JNU protests, Delhi’s citizens are facing transport issues as approximately four Metro stations in Delhi were temporarily suspended and roads leading to the JNU area were blocked.

However, later, on the evening of the 18th of November, the HRD Ministry officials met a delegation of JNUSU and asked them to submit a memorandum containing their demands.  The Delhi Police also released the 100 detained students.

Meanwhile, opposition parties raised the issue of hike in hostel fee on the 2nd day of the Parliament session.  On the 19th of November, the students intensified their protest and demanded an urgent meeting with the Government officials to consider their demands, as the JNU management is not responding to their demand of rolling back the increased hostel fee.

As of now, the students are shouting slogans against the JNU management outside the campus, asking the authorities to agree to their demands . The Police are trying to control the situation.

Stay tuned for further updates.
