Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud was sworn in as the 50th Chief Justice of India on the 9th of November, Wednesday.
The new CJI of India, Mr. D.Y. Chandrachud was administered the oath of office by the President of India, Ms. Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan, Delhi. Taking the office charges on the 9th of November, Mr. D.Y. Chandrachud would serve as the head of the Supreme Court for two years, till the 10th of November 2024. He succeeds Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who was at the top post for a short tenure of 74 days, as he turned 65, the retiring age for the CJI, on the 8th of November.
Highlighting the career of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the Supreme Court judge, he was elevated as a Supreme Court judge on the 13th of May 2016. He has been part of several Constitution benches and landmark verdicts, including in the Ayodhya land dispute and the right to privacy. Furthermore, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud was also part of the benches that delivered crucial judgments on decriminalising same sex relations by partially striking down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC,) the validity of the Aadhaar scheme and the Sabarimala temple issue, which restricted entry of women. Recently, he also led an Apex Court bench and allowed Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act to include “unmarried women.”
It is to be noted, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s father, Justice Y.V. Chandrachud was also the CJI of India, and served for the longest tenure of seven years (1978-1985.) Justice D.Y. Chandrachud became CJI of India, 44 years after his father.
