The Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a judicial inquiry into the clash erupted during the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Koregaon Bhima Battle in Pune.
One person lost their life due to the clash at the celebrations. A group opposed the celebrations on the basis that the British had won the Battle of Koregaon. This group clashed with a rally of Dalits who were walking towards the Koregaon Bhima Battle Memorial.
Fadnavis stated the inquiry would reveal the exact circumstances and asked the people not to believe in rumors. He further added, “Around 3 lakh people had gathered (for the Koregaon Bhima battle anniversary celebrations). Some people tried to create a serious scene. But six companies (of security personnel) were posted. Police promptly controlled the situation and averted a major problem.”
The CM said, “We have ordered a judicial probe in the incident under a sitting HC judge. Rs 10 lakh compensation for the next to kin of the deceased (has been announced).”
Fadnavis also stated, “I appeal political parties to refrain from making any decisive statements.” This was a direct jab at the Opposition parties claiming the right wing forces were behind the violence.
The Nationalist Congress Party Supremo Sharad Pawar alleged he had spoken to a local who claimed the violence was sparked by an outsider from a right wing organization. The Congress condemned the violence and claimed it was completely premeditated.
The violence broke out while the Dalit were taking the annual trek to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon 1818. The British forces defeated the Peshwas army to gain victory.
