Mawlynnong Village in Meghalaya is the cleanest in Asia

Mawlynnong‘ is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state, India. it is located 90 km from Shillong, along the India-Bangladesh border.  Mawlynnong is famous for its matrilineal society. The village is now being projected as Asia’s cleanest village.

As of 2014, there are about 95 households in Mawlynnong. Agriculture is the chief occupation of the local population, with betel nut being the main crop.The people residing in the community are Khasi people.

How Mawlynnong Village managed to be cleanest Villige of Asia?

1. The waste matter in the village is dumped in dustbins that are made of bamboos. The waste is later thrown into a pit, The pit waste is later converted and mixed up to be used as manure.

2. Plastic bags and smoking is strictly banned in the Village.

3. People who litter around are fined. Those who cut trees are also fined. According to stats less than 5 trees were chopped down in the past decade!!

4. The Khasi society in the village follows the matrilineal system whereby, property and wealth are transferred from the mother to the youngest of her daughters, who is also entitled to keep mother’s surname. Also, it is not an unusual thing to see women running shops here while their men tend farms.

5. The main asset of the village is that they maintain Literacy 100% rate.
