After the opposition announced Mr. Yashwant Sinha as the Presidential candidate for the forthcoming elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government also announced its candidate.

On Tuesday the 21st of June, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led NDA named Ms. Droupadi Murmu as the candidate for the 15th Presidential election.  The decision to nominate Ms. Droupadi Murmu was taken unanimously.

With this, in the 2022 Presidential elections, it is going to be Mr. Yashwant Sinha vs Ms. Droupadi Murmu.

Furthermore, Ms. Droupadi Murmu is the former Governor of Jharkhand.  After electing Ms. Droupadi Murmu as the NDA’s Presidential candidate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, the downtrodden as well as the marginalised.  She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure.  I am confident she will be a great President of our nation.”

Highlighting the impact of the NDA’s decision on the party and its progress, Ms. Droupadi Murmu is a strong Tribal leader and nominating her for the President of India, the highest post of India would gain some tribal vote bank for the BJP.  For long term political benefits, with this decision, the BJP could also strengthen themselves in states like Odisha, and Jharkhand and attract the tribal population in India. 

Notably, approximately  8.60% of India’s population is consist of Tribals.

Meanwhile, the Presidential elections are scheduled on the 18th of July and the results would be announced on the 21st of July.
