Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 22nd of October, addressed the people of West Bengal and wished them for the beginning of Durga Puja. 

The biggest festival of West Bengal and Bengalis, Durga Puja started from the 22nd of October.

PM Modi’s address came on Durga Shasthi or the sixth day of the ongoing nine day Navratri festival.

Mr. Modi started his speech in Bengali and wished people of West Bengal. He said, “Durga Puja is an auspicious occasion, which celebrates the victory of good over evil. We pray to Maa Durga to bless us with strength, happiness and good health.”

In a tweet, Mr. Modi said, “Sisters and brothers of West Bengal, tomorrow, on the auspicious day of Maa Durga Pujo’s Mahashashti, I would join the Divine celebrations via video conferencing and shall also be extending my greetings to everyone. Do join the programme live.” he had posted in a subsequent tweet.

The nine day navratri festival would continue till the 26th of October, Vijayadashmi or Dussehra.

In West Bengal, pandals have been decorated and the City has been decorated like a bride to celebrate the biggest festival Durga Puja.

However, due to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19, this year crowds and people would not be allowed inside the pandals.

As per the guidelines of the Calcutta High Court, in 2020 there would be no entry zone in pandal for people. Only organisers and committee members would be allowed to enter the pandals.

In addition, sanitization and face masks would be mandatory for all who would step outside their houses during Durga Puja.
