Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 2nd of October, paid tribute to former Prime Minister of India the late Lal Bahadur Shastri. 

On the occasion of Lal Bahadur Shastri’s 116th birth anniversary, Mr. Modi said, “Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji was humble and firm.He epitomised simplicity and lived for the welfare of our nation.We remember him on his Jayanti with a deep sense of gratitude for everything he has done for India.”

Lal Bahadur Shastri was the second Prime Minister of India from 1964 to 1966.

He was also the one who promoted the White Revolution (production of dairy products) and the Green Revolution (agriculture) in India.

Lal Bahadur Shastri who shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi was influenced by his movement and ideologies and joined the Indian Independence Movement in 1920.

Later, post independence, he joined the Indian National Congress under the first Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Mr. Shastri was the first Railway Minister of India from 1951 to 1956. He also served as the Home Minister of India.

Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri also played a prominent part during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965.

On the 10th of January 1966, Lal Bahadur Shastri signed a peace treaty and ended the war.

Later, on the 11th of January 1966, he died in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (then Soviet Union.

Lal Bahadur Shastri died a day after the end of Indo-Pakistan war.

However, the cause of his death is still said to be unclear.

Reports suggest he died of a cardiac arrest and his family claimed it to be a conspiracy.

Mr. Shastri was also awarded the Bharat RatnaRatna, the highest civilian award in India.
