Prime Minister Narendra Modi turns 76 on September 17th, marking another milestone in a political journey that began in Vadnagar, Gujarat, where he was born in 1950. From growing up in a modest family to becoming the Prime Minister of India, Modi’s journey has passed through several important stages of public life.
As a young man, Modi became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he took up various organisational responsibilities. His political career entered a major phase in 2001 when he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He remained in the post for more than 12 years before moving to national politics.
In 2014, Modi led the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections and became Prime Minister on May 26 that year. He returned as Prime Minister after the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His years in office have included major decisions and programmes covering areas such as infrastructure, digital technology, welfare, manufacturing, space and foreign relations.
His 76th birthday also comes as he approaches another major milestone. On October 7, Modi will complete 25 years in elected executive office, beginning with his first term as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001. The BJP is marking the occasion with the month-long ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also wished PM Modi on his birthday, wishing him good health and a long life. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, President Droupadi Murmu, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, M.K. Stalin, N. Chandrababu Naidu and several other leaders also extended their birthday greetings.
