Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s food security project has been a game-changer, in reducing extreme poverty in India. According to a study conducted by the International Monetary Fund, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government scheme, “Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana” is helping to prevent an increase in extreme poverty levels in India.
Despite the 2020 lockdown and extreme economic crisis, across the world, the Indian Government managed to provide food and essential commodities to the underprivileged people of India under various welfare schemes. The study of the IMF paper mentioned, “Pandemic, Poverty, and Inequality: Evidence from India found that extreme poverty (with purchasing power parity of less than USD 1.9 per person per day) in India was less than 1% in 2019 and it remained constant even during the pandemic in 2020.”
The study further read, “PMGKAY was critical in preventing any increase in extreme poverty levels in India and the doubling of food entitlements worked substantially in terms of absorbing the Covid-induced income shocks on the poor.”
It is to be noted, Mr. Narendra Modi also extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which provides free grains to the poor, till September 2022.
