The President of India Ram Nath Kovind, on the night of the 17th of September, accepted the resignation of Harsimrat Kaur.

Recently, Harsimrat Kaur, the former Food Processing Industries Minister of India and a member of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD,) submitted her resignation.

On the 17th of September, Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned as the Union Cabinet Minister and protested against the farm ordinance passed in the Lok Sabha.

On the 17th of September, passed the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 by a voice vote.

Ms. Kaur took to Twitter and said, “I have resigned from (the) Union Cabinet in protest against anti-farmer ordinances and legislation. Proud to stand with farmers as their daughter & sister (sic.)”

According to Ms. Kaur, the new ordinances for farmers and agriculture would be a huge loss for farmers of Haryana and Punjab, who are protesting from days.

According to the passed ordinances, the Minimum Support Price (MSP,) area of trading and others would be under the Indian Government.

The farmers are protesting against the bill since it was proposed by the Union Government on the 5th of June.

While initially, the SAD supported its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in passing the ordinances, recently on the 28th of August, the Party of Punjab backed out and supported farmers’ agitation.

The SAD leaders even opposed the bill during the Monsoon Parliament session and voted against it.

As soon as the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha session, Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from her post as the Union Cabinet Minister.

After Ms. Badal tendered her resignation, President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignation and assigned Narendra Singh Tomar the additional charge of the ministry.

The President’s office released a communique regarding the same on the night of the 17th of September. The communique read, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.”

The communique further read, “Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, The President has directed that Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Cabinet Minister, be assigned the charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, in addition to his existing portfolios.”

Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Agriculture Minister was appointed after the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Narendra Singh Tomar would take additional charges from the 18th of September.
