Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 16th of April, addressed the media through a video conference and briefed about the COVID-19 crisis.

Mr. Gandhi said India needs to gear up for fast and aggressive tests of COVID-19 in every district of India.

Rahul Gandhi said, “Covid-19 cannot be controlled, it has to be managed.  If you manage it well, you will be able to fight it. One has to go beyond conversations, put money on the table.  Ask CMs what they need, how the Centre can help.”

Stating the lockdown is a temporary solution to the COVID-19, Rahul Gandhi suggested the Centre to control the main arteries and the national transportation, whereas states need to maintain the districts.

Speaking to reporters, Rahul Gandhi said, “I have been speaking to experts in India and abroad on the COVID-19.  A lockdown is like a pause button, it is in no way a solution to the problem. Lockdown allows time and space to put in medical resources, ramp up testing, prepare hospitals, create architecture to fight the virus before it picks up again.”

When asked whether the steps the Central Government is taking are absolutely fine or appropriate or is on par or better than other countries in terms of dealing with the pandemic illness, Rahul Gandhi showed disappointment.  Mr. Gandhi said he is not concerned about other nations, just India. He said, the lockdown would see a few challenges in these few major areas :

  • Testing of COVID-19
  • Food Shortage
  • Small enterprise and business which gives 40 % employment’
  • Economic crisis

Considering these challenges as a future financial backlash, Rahul Gandhi suggested the Central Government to have a proper strategy to fight the economic crisis after 3-4 months.

Rahul Gandhi highlighted the strengths of India and said united, India would be able to defeat the Coronavirus infection and stand strong.  He said, “”I may disagree with PM Narendra Modi on a lot of issues, but this is not the time for that. We have to be united in our fight against the Coronavirus.  Fighting together is not going to take India forward. If we fight each other we will lose.”

Emphasising on the need of testing in each and every area of India, Rahul Gandhi said, “Testing is a strategic weapon to fight the Novel Coronavirus.”  He said random testing would only be helpful to be a step ahead of the virus, as currently we are running after places where COVID-19 have been found with a large number of cases.

Currently the Indian Government identified 170 hotspots and 200 plus potential hotspots in India for the spread of the Novel Coronavirus.  Healthcare packages, medical equipment, PPEs and other facilities are also arranged for the medical department, shelter homes and food supply also arranged for migrant labourers and below poverty line (BPL) people by state governments.

Despite these precautionary measures and the Nationwide lockdown for 19 days, India is witnessing a large number of cases reported across India every day.

Till the 16th of April, India reported a total of  12,769 cases of COVID-19 with 426 deaths till date.
