Amid the Punjab political crisis, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) called for an urgent high level meeting.

After the resignation of Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) there is speculation of an internal rift between Mr. Sidhu and the new Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi.

Many media sources and political leaders suggested that Navjot Singh Sidhu is unhappy with the appointment of a Dalit leader as the CM of Punjab, hence submitted his resignation. However, neither Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu nor Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi made any comments regarding the rumours.

Meanwhile, speaking about the current situation, Mr. Rahul Gandhi called for a high level meeting, scheduled today afternoon in Delhi. The main point of today’s meeting would be the situation in Punjab including Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu’s resignation. In addition to this, the criticism of Mr. Kapil Sibal, the G23 leader of the INC, would also be discussed in today’s high level meeting.

Captain Amarinder Singh, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, who submitted his resignation is also going to be a part of today’s meeting.

Mr. Kapil Sibal was one of the 23 Congress leaders who wrote to the Interim President of the INC Ms. Sonia Gandhi, highlighting that the uncertainty over leadership has weakened the party. On the 23rd of August, 2020 a few INC leaders raised issues regarding the leadership in the Party.

Recently, after the resignation of two INC leaders from crucial positions, Mr. Kapil Sibal pointed out the fault in the INC rule and criticised the chaos, especially when elections are soon to be held.

The developments came at a time when Punjab is set to conduct the General Assembly elections in 2022. This time, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) the ruling Government of Delhi is also going to contest the elections against the BJP and the Indian National Congress.

The Punjab Assembly election for 117 seats is scheduled to be held in 2022.
