Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) on the 4th of August, met with the family of the nine year old gang rape victim in Delhi.

Recently on the 1st of August, a nine year old Dalit girl was gang raped and murdered. After committing the crime, the attackers cremated her body in South West Delhi. The incident which got media attention on the 3rd of August, witnessed an uproar from the opposition and netizens, demanding Justice for the victim.

What was the incident?

A nine year old girl, of the Dalit community, resident of Purana Mangal in Delhi Cantonment area was allegedly kidnapped and gang raped by a priest along with three others. The incident took place late in the evening of the 31st of July, later on the 1st of August, she was murdered and cremated.

After visiting the family of the victim, Rahul Gandhi said, “I spoke with the family, they want justice and nothing else. They are saying that justice is not being given to them and they should be helped. We will do that. I have said that I am standing with them. Rahul Gandhi is standing with them until they get justice.”

On the 3rd of August, Rahul Gandhi took to Twitter and demanded justice for the girl and addressed her as ‘Nation’s daughter.’ In his tweet, he said, “Dalit’s child is also the nation’s daughter.”

Besides the INC leader, the Delhi Chief Minister Mr. Arvind Kejriwal is also scheduled to meet with the family. He will visit the family at 11:30 P.M., today, the 4th of August (Wednesday.)

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have registered a case against under the relevant sections, like 376 (rape,) 302 (murder,) 506 (criminal intimidation) and 204 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.) The four suspects have been charged under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) Act also.

The incident gained a lot of media attention which sparked outrage on social media. Netizens and citizens of India are comparing it to the Hathras rape case and demanded the death penalty/strict action against the culprits.

Many politicians, social activists and others stood by the victim’s family and assured support until justice is done.
