The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 10th of January, Monday, heard a plea over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach issue.
During the hearing, the Apex Court bench was led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Surya Kant. The Court reviewed the matter and agreed for an investigation into the security lapse, during PM Modi’s Punjab visit.
During the hearing, the Court lashed out at the Central Government for saying there is no need for a hearing. The Court said, “Don’t show that we are not serious.”
Justice Hima Kohli said, “The impression you’re giving to the court is that you have already made up your mind. So, why did you come to the court and tell us on Friday that you will hold your horses?”
In addition, Justice Surya Kant said, “Your show cause notice is contradictory. In the same notice, you’re saying that you are constituting a committee [for inquiry] and then you say they are guilty. Who has held them guilty? Where was the inquiry?”
The Court also ordered the formation of a new committee led by a former SC judge for the probe. The Court also asked the Central Government and the Punjab Government to stop their respective probes in the matter.
The panel formed by the Top Court would include the Director General of Police (DGP) of Chandigarh, the Inspector General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA,) the registrar general of the high court. A retired Supreme Court judge would head the panel.
It is to be noted, in view of the major ‘security lapse’, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, cancelled his Ferozepur visit. According to sources, Mr. Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Ferozepur, Punjab, on the 5th of January, Wednesday. He landed at Bhatinda helipad on a special helicopter and was scheduled to reach Ferozepur’s Hussainiwala. However, due to cloudy weather, he decided to reach there via road. On the way he was stuck for 15 to 20 minutes at a flyover, which was 30 km from Hussainiwala memorial. Reportedly, a group from the Bharatiya Kisan Union blocked the road, preventing PM Modi’s car from moving further.
Considering the situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs of India, issued a statement regarding the cancellation of the visit. Later, the matter reached the Supreme Court.
