SC Permits Abortion For 6 And Half Months Pregnant Woman

On Monday, the Supreme Court permitted a woman in her 26th week of pregnancy to get an abortion. This decision was passed as the fetus was suffering from multiple cardiac ailments.

A bench of Justice M. Khanwilkar and Justice Dipak Misra said that the abortion procedure should be carried out “forthwith” at the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

This order came after the bench followed the medical report by the SC issued board and also the SSKM Hospital. They advised the termination of pregnancy saying that the mother would suffer “severe mental injury” if the pregnancy is continued. The report also said the child, if born alive, will have to undergo multiple surgeries for multiple cardiac ailments.

The bench said “Keeping in view the report of the medical board, we are inclined to allow the prayer and direct medical termination of pregnancy of petitioner no. 1 (woman).”

The lady and her husband approached the apex court seeking permission to abort her fetus. They claimed that the abnormalities could be fatal to her (the mother) and issue an order for termination of pregnancy.
