SC To Hear Plea Against Ban On Controversial BBC Documentary On PM Modi

The Supreme Court (SC,) agreed to hear the petitions filed against the ban of the controversial BBC documentary about PM Narendra Modi and 2002 Gujarat Riots.

On the 30th of January, the Top Court bench comprising of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice  P.S. Narasimha and Justice J.B. Pardiwala reviewed a bunch of petitions, and listed the matter to the 6th of February.

According to sources, lawyer M.L. Sharma and senior advocate C.U. Singh filed separate Public Interest Litigations (PILs) on the issue, and sought an urgent listing of the matter.  In addition, a senior journalist N. Ram also filed a petition against the ban of the documentary, calling it unconstitutional.

It is to be noted, the Government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi banned the BBC documentary, India: Question To PM Modi.  The documentary was said to be banned from YouTube and other media platforms for its content, especially about the controversial 2002 Gujarat Riots, when Mr. Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.  However, the Union External Affairs Ministry directed to ban the documentary calling it a propaganda piece” that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

The opposition parties’ leaders and activists called this an unconstitutional move and urged the SC to list the matter soon.  The Apex Court has listed the matter for the 6th of February.
