Mr. S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister (EAM) of India, addressed an event in Gujarat and highlighted how education and social awareness helped in keeping the Indian population in control.

On the 4th of September, Sunday, Mr. S. Jaishankar launched the Gujarati translation of his book, The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World, at an event in Gujarat.  During the launch, the Union Minister Mr. S. Jaishankar discussed India’s population.  He said, “The rate of growth of Indian population is falling.  The reason is education, social awareness and prosperity.  The family size among each one of us, with the passage of time, is small (sic.)”

“Since its Independence, India has witnessed a huge change in its demographic structure.  It has gone through a population explosion (Census 1951) and has also witnessed a decline in the total fertility rate,” said Mr. S. Jaishankar.

The statement of Mr. S. Jaishankar came a month after the United Nations World Population Prospects (WPP) 2022 predicted that India will surpass China and will become the most populated nation by 2023.  As of now, India has 17.5% of the world’s population, with close to 140 crore people.  India is projected to reach 150 crores by 2030 and 166 crores by 2050.

Concerned about the situation, Mr. S. Jaishankar said, “… Forced population control can have very dangerous consequences, it can create a gender imbalance.”

Meanwhile, in 2021, India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) slipped below the replacement level of fertility (which is 2.1 children per woman) to two.

Furthermore, the Union Minister Mr. S. Jaishankar also spoke about India’s independent foreign policy which has been transformed under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  Highlighting the efforts of Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, India has good relations and bilateral talks with many nations, including Israel, with which India was not on good terms due to political reasons.

Lauding PM Mr. Narendra Modi, Mr. S. Jaishankar said, “I will envy the person who is the Foreign Minister in 2047, but I will tell you one thing, to be the Foreign Minister of Narendra Modi govt is also a great strength.  There are core beliefs, confidence and attitude, and the world is recognising it.”
