On the 7th of October, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced 24 fake universities operating in India.
According to sources, these 24 universities are self styled and are unrecognized by the UGC.
Rajnish Jain, the Secretary of the UGC said, “Students and public are informed that currently 24 self-styled, unrecognised institutions are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, which have been declared as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree.”
An official notice regarding the same was issued which read, “A degree can be awarded, only a University established under a Central, State/Provisional Act or an institution deemed to be university.”
The information was a warning to the students who would take admission in colleges or universities for higher studies.
While eight of these universities are from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi has seven, Odisha and West Bengal have two each.
In addition, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry have one fake university each.
