The 2018 Unnao rape case victim died at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, 40 hours after sustaining 90 % burn injuries due to being set on fire.
On the night of the 6th of December, after being on a ventilator, the victim succumbed to her burn injuries.
The spokesperson of the Safdarjung Hospital confirmed the news and said, “She [the Unnao rape victim] suffered a cardiac arrest at 11:10 P.M., and we tried to resuscitate her, but she could not survive and at 11:40 P.M., she died.”
On the 5th of December, five men, identified as Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shubham Trivedi and Shivam Trivedi, were alleged to have thrashed the victim and burned her alive.
The incident took place when the victim was on her way to attend the court hearing of the 2018 rape case, which she filed against two of the five victims. In 2018, Shubham and Shivam abducted the victim and raped her. According to sources, one of the main accused is the son of the Pradhan of Sindupur village in Unnao.
Though the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Shubham, the main accused, on the 30th of November, they released him on bail. After being released, Shubham followed the victim and threatened her. Although the victim and her family filed several complaints at the Bihar Police Station, the Police did not take any action against the culprits.
Hours before she passed away, the victim asked her brother to save her life, saying she does not want to die. She said, “Bhaiya mujhe bacha lo, mujhe marna nahi hai. Jinhonne mere sath ye kiya hai, unhe mai maut ki saza paatey dekhna chahti hu. (I don’t want to die. Those who have done this to me, I want to see them hanged to death.)”
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police tightened the security for the victim’s family in Delhi as well as in Sindupur village of Unnao district. The Police also said the case would be a fast track one and launched an investigation for the same.
