The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government, on the 15th of October, terminated 25,000 Home Guards, or daily wage police officers, across UP.
The Home Guards is a voluntary force deployed according to the demand and get paid regularly. Before the termination of the 25,000 officials, there were 1 lakh Home Guards in UP.
The State Police deploy Home Guards at traffic intersections, on VIP duty and for crowd management at rallies and private political functions.
The decision to terminate the Home Guards came after a recent meeting on the 11th of October between the Government officials in Prayagraj. The UP Government also issued an order to terminate the officers.
B.P. Jogdang, the Additional Director General (ADG) of Uttar Pradesh Police Prayagraj headquarters, issued the notice which read, “The decision to end 25,000 Home Guard services was taken on August 28 this year in a meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary.”
The Yogi Adityanath led UP Government took this step after the Supreme Court (SC) asked the State Government to increase the wages of the Home Guards from Rs. 500 to Rs. 672 per day. Since the State Government increased the salaries of the officials, they reduced the number of Home Guards due to financial constraints.
The State Government also reduced the number of reporting days of the Home Guards from 25 to 15.
