The United States of America (U.S.A.,) issued a statement regarding the recent Income Tax (IT) raids conducted at the British Broadcasting Company’s (BBC) offices in Delhi and Mumbai.
Mr. Ned Price, the United States Department Spokesperson of the BBC said, “We are aware of the search of the BBC offices in Delhi by Indian tax authorities. I would need to refer you to Indian authorities for the details of this search. Beyond this discrete action, what I’ll say more broadly is the general point that I’ve consistently made in this context, but in a universal context as well.” He further said that the United States is aware of the survey operation but would refrain from commenting as they sought a detailed report on this.
During his interaction with the media, Mr. Ned Price said that they support the importance of the free press and would continue to highlight the importance of freedom of expression and freedom of religion or belief as human rights.
It is to be noted, amid the ongoing controversy over BBC’s documentary about PM Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat Riots, the IT conducted raids at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai. The raids were conducted on the 14th of February, amid allegations of tax evasion and were said to be a part of the tax evasion investigation.
The searches are still underway at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai.
