Uttar Pradesh will witness the fight for the crown in the fifth phase of elections today. On Monday, 51 constituencies in 11 districts in UP located near the Awadh and Terai belt and also East UP will be in polling. This region is a highly backward but agriculturally rich region and Muslims, Brahmins, Thakurs and also non-Yadav and non-Jat dalits will play a major role in electing the candidates.
All the parties contesting in UP are currently in confusion as they do not substantially know what their position is in the race. Till the last elections the war was mostly in between Samajwadi Party (SP) and other minor parties. But with the family clashes in SP, other parties have entered in the race while a split up SP has collaborated with Congress. The stronghold of SP has now fallen and parties like Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) have developed greater audience.
The contestants also have not given up on the possibility of communal polarization and also remarks by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah who have highlighted the lack of basic facilities in the state. But it is expected that the 3.07 lakh new voters in the election will be devoid of caste and religion and break the communal barriers this elections. The constituencies will be mostly deciding in triangular contest between BJP-Apna Dal, SP-Congress and the BSP.
The fifth phase of polling will also decide the Akilesh Yadav party’s eight ministers fate. This includes Speaker in the outgoing assembly Mata Prasad Pandey (Etawah), BSP state president Ram Achal Rajbhar (Akbarpur) and Peace Party president Muhammad Ayub (Khalilabad.) Most of the other contestants in this race are royalty who will be competing in almost all of the 51 constituencies in the fifth phase of elections in the Uttar Pradesh polls.
