In today’s by election, a total of 6,97,164 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the three constituencies.

In order to conduct smooth and peaceful voting, the West Bengal Government deployed police forces. Tight security has been arranged in all the voting centres in the three Assembly constituencies.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also ensured that all arrangements are being made following the Wuhan virus protocols, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,). Officials have been deployed to see that everyone follows COVID-19 protocols like social distancing, mandatory face mask wearing and sanitization, strictly. In addition, the Election Commission of India (ECI) also deployed 72 companies of the Central forces in all the three Constituencies including 35 in Bhawanipore.

The voting in all the constituencies, Bhawanipore, Jangipur and Samserganj would continue till 6:00 P.M.

The by election was announced after the MLA of Bhawanipore resigned from his post. Despite winning the Bhawanipore Assembly constituency, Mr. Sovondeb Chattopadhyay resigned from the Member of the Legislative Assembly post. The decision to resign the post was in order to make room for the Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee.

It is to be noted, if the current CM Ms. Mamata Banerjee fails to win the MLA seat, under Article 164(4) of the Constitution of India, a minister who is not a member of the Legislature of the State for a period of six consecutive months cannot be the chief minister.

Meanwhile, the election for the other two constituencies, Jangipur and Samserganj was cancelled due to the demise of two candidates.

The counting of the by election votes would be held on the 3rd of October, following which the results would be announced.
