West Bengal Reports Massive Surge In COVID-19 Cases, Reports Over 2,000 Cases In 24 Hours

Amid New Years and Christmas celebrations, West Bengal reported 2,128 new cases of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

In the past 24 hours, the 30th of December, Thursday, the COVID-19 cases increased by 50%, compared to cases on the 29th of December (1, 089.) In addition, of the total cases, 1,090 cases were reported from Kolkata. West Bengal registered more than 2,000 cases after nearly six months. The State’s positivity rate also jumped to 5.47 %, double from the previous 2.84% on Wednesday. With this, West Bengal has so far reported 16,35,034 COVID-19 cases.

Besides 2,128 cases, West Bengal also registered 12 deaths, taking the toll to 19,757 and 1,067 recoveries.

Of the total 12 deaths, four of the latest deaths happened in Kolkata, two each in North 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Darjeeling, and one each in South 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur.

On the 30th of December, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, said, “Country is again witnessing a surge in Covid cases. In such a scenario, we need to review the situation. If the numbers keep increasing, we may consider closing down schools and colleges.”

Currently, West Bengal has 16,35,034 COVID-19 cases, of which 16,06,501 are recovered cases and 8,776 are active cases. In addition to COVID-19 cases, the State also has 11 cases of Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus, of which only one recovered and the remaining 10 are undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, in view of the New Year’s celebration, the imposed night curfew (11:00 P.M., to 5:00 A.M.,) was relaxed due to festivals like Christmas and New Year (the 24th of December to the 1st of January.)

In addition, transportation, clubs and markets are also allowed to remain open during the relaxed duration of Christmas and New Year celebration.
