Former Pakistan opener Salman Butt has backed Virat Kohli, saying that the former India skipper should not be labeled a “failed captain” because he did not win a senior ICC title during his reign.

In an interview, Mr. Salman Butt said that he believes that only those unfamiliar with the game will judge a captain’s performance based on the number of ICC trophies he has won.  He stated that it was simply a matter of losing a high-pressure game or bad luck.

“People who do not understand the game of cricket very well judge a captain’s performance based on how he has fared in the Champions Trophy or the World Cup. However, if you have a good win percentage and are tactically very strong, but haven’t won a big tournament, it wouldn’t be fair to say that you haven’t been a good captain,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.  He further added, “There might have been a few mistakes in high-pressure games, or it might just have been a case of luck. Virat Kohli, one of the greatest batters in cricket history, was named India’s Test captain in 2014. In 2017, Kohli took over as India’s white-ball captain from MS Dhoni. The Indian cricket team finished second in the Champions Trophy in 2017 under Kohli’s

The former Indian Cricket Captain Virat Kohli led India to the 50-over World Cup semi-finals in 2019, but he failed to win the coveted trophy in England. Notably, during an appearance on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) podcast, Virat Kohli stated how many people labeled him a failed captain for failing to lead India to an ICC trophy win.
