On Monday, the Indian women’s cricket team achieved new heights after the openers Poonam Raut and Deepti Sharma made a record of most runs scored. In the match where the team had a 249 run win, Poonam and Deepthi together made a score of 320 runs. This was in a match against Ireland in the ODI match of women’s quadrangular series in Senwes Park of Potchefstroom.

India made a whopping score of 358/2 in the first innings, Ireland was all out for 109 in 40 overs. The record set by the two was the biggest opening stand in ODIs for both men and women. Deepthi made 188 runs off 166 balls, which is the second highest score any individual scored in women’s cricket. Poonam scored 109 during their record stand that lasted for 45.3 overs.

Deepti, now India’s highest scorer in women’s cricket hit 27 fours and two sixes in her 188 runs. The first position in the world in held by Belinda Clark of Australia, with all time high of 229 not out. The second position was held by Jaya Sharma, an Indian again, who scored 138 not out against Pakistan in Karachi in 2005.

Another record for the Indian women’s team was the score of 358. Before yesterday, the team never crossed 300 mark in ODIs and had the highest of 298/2 against West Indies in 2004.

Before the opening partnership record of Deepti and Poonam, the highest partnership recorded was England’s 268 against South Africa in 2008 by Sarah Taylor and Caroline Atkins.

The Indian women’s team are now unbeaten in the tournament with wins in all four matches against Ireland- twice, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
