The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Mr. A. Revanth Reddy criticised the Central Government for renaming the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.

On the 6th of August, Mr. Revanth Reddy opposed the decision of renaming the award as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award after the name of the legendary Hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.

The TPCC President said, the move to change the name of the award by Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, shows his mindset. He said that Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India and late senior leader of the Indian National Congress contributed to the sports field in India. He was the one to provide better facilities to the sports departments in India and enhanced towards growth and development. Considering his efforts and work for the development of the Sports sector, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest award in the sports sector, was established. The first Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award was given to the chess champion in 1991.

The TPCC President took to his official Twitter handle and demanded to rename Narendra Modi Stadium and Arun Jaitley Stadium after any sports legend. His tweet read, “After renaming the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to Dhyanchand Khel Ratna award, We demand the PM to rename the world’s largest cricket stadium from Narendra Modi stadium to a cricketer’s name. And also ArunJaitley stadium in Delhi to some cricket legend’s name.

@RahulGandhi.”

Meanwhile, on the 6th of August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and posted a tweet announcing the change of name of the Khel Ratna Award.

In the tweet, PM Modi said, “I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views. Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award! Jai Hind!”
