On Thursday, the GHMC officials demolished most of the parts of unauthorized layout in the Begumpet area. The layout was drawn by the Pride India construction group who had occupied as much as ten acres from the full tank level of the Hussainsagar Lake. The lake has been already been shrunk in the past few years due to illegal constructions.
The layout is located at the Brahmanwadi area in Begumpet and is spread over 10 acres in the Full-Tank Level area of the iconic level. The full tank level is kept as a reserve so that in an emergency situation of a flood, the area will absorb the excess waters, which would affect the residents. The civic authorities shut down the corporate construction groups office located on the site.
Hussainsagar had a total water spread area of 8.5 square kilometers till 2000. According to 2016 statistics, the lake has now a water spread of 5.4 Square kilometers. This is mainly due to the occupation of the lake’s land by not only private individuals but also government institutions. The rapid urbanization has not only affected the land area but has also contaminated the water to the level that the government is now investing several hundred crores for its cleaning.
