After the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders observed a day long fast.

The BJP leaders of Telangana observed the fast to protest against the State Election Commission (SEC) and Police for not taking action against the violence which occured due to the opposition.

In a GHMC division, a small clash occurred between the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the BJP cadres. The clash turned into violence. However, there was no property damage or casualties.

The BJP blamed the TRS for the clash and also expressed disappointment over the State police and SEC, for not taking any action against the ruling Party.

The BJP National President of the Other Backward Class (OBC) Morcha Dr. K. Laxman, Party National Vice President D.K. Aruna, former Member of Parliament (MP) and senior BJP leader Vivek Venkataswamy, sat on a day long fast at the State party headquarters.

Addressing the media, the BJP leaders said the SEC is being undemocratic and the State police are protecting the ruling TRS Government. They also said the ruling party had brought in its cadre from outside of the city and stationed them in different municipal divisions for the distribution of money and liquor, to influence the voters.

They even blamed the TRS, the SEC and the State police for the low percentage of voters.

According to sources, only 36.73 % of voters performed their franchise and casted votes. It is the lowest turn out. In 2016, the turnout was much higher, at 45.29 %.

However, the BJP is confident of winning and said, “The bogey of law and order issues was raised by KCR (K.Chandrashekar Rao) himself once he had realised that the BJP is gaining ground and he has succeeded in ensuring a historic low in voting. Yet, despite all these anti democratic actions, we are going to win this election and the Mayor post.”

They also alleged the TRS ministers, the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and the leaders of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC,) imposed during the GHMC elections.

Concluding the day long fast, the BJP leaders ended their fast with lemon water offered by the Union Minister for Home Affairs of State, G.Kishan Reddy.
