BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) has questioned the Telangana government’s reported plan to import coal from overseas amid shortages at thermal power plants.
According to reports, the State is considering importing up to 50 lakh tonnes of coal from Australia and Indonesia. The reported cost of imported coal is around ₹9,000 per tonne, while Singareni coal is available at about ₹3,800 per tonne, according to the report.
KTR questioned why Telangana would import coal at a higher cost when domestic supplies are available. He also asked who would bear the additional financial burden.
The reported move comes amid coal shortages at Telangana’s thermal power plants. Recent reports said some plants had only a few days of coal stocks.
KTR also recalled that the previous BRS government supplied round-the-clock power using coal from Singareni Collieries. His remarks come as the State explores ways to improve coal supplies for power generation.
