In a major relief to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) the Supreme Court (SC) allowed plaster of paris (PoP) Ganesh idol immersion in Hussain Sagar.

On the 16th of September, the Apex Court reviewed a petition filed against the Telangana High Court judgement regarding the same. Recently, the State HC refused to allow PoP Ganesh idol immersion in the Hussain Sagar, Tank Bund. Despite ensuring arrangements and promise of cleaning the lake by the TRS Government, the Telangana HC refused the petition and asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to make artificial ponds for PoP idols.

Disappointed with the Telangana HC judgment, the State Government moved the petition to the SC, which was in favour of the ruling Government. During the court proceedings today, the Top Court bench led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana granted permission for immersion of idols. However, the court put a condition, according to which, the GHMC and the TRS Government would be responsible for the cleaning of the lake. The court asked the concerned authority to remove the waste of PoP idols from the lake water, immediately.

In addition, the Apex Court also asked the K. Chandrashekar Rao led TRS Government to make the necessary arrangements for this from next year. With this it is clear, this would be the last Ganesh Chaturthi, in which PoP Ganesh idols are allowed for immersion in the Hussain Sagar, Tank Bund.

The last date for Ganesh idols’ immersion is said to be the 19th of September. By Sunday, almost all the Ganesh idols of pandals and areas would be immersed in Telangana’s Hussain Sagar.
