In Telangana, the number of Tuberculosis increased, taking the overall tally to over 2 lakh between 2019-2021.

The increased cases are said to be a major concern for the Telangana Health Department, especially, after efforts to curb tuberculosis (TB.)   The numbers are rising in districts of Telangana, including the regions of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. In the past  3 years, the State Capital, Hyderabad witnessed over 35,000 TB cases.

Dr. A. Rajesham, the Joint Director for TB Treatment in Telangana said that the State saw a total of 1,95,454 cases of TB from 2019 to 2021.   According to the Chief Medical Officer, National Tuberculosis Institute, the upward trend has been across the country as 40% of the population carry Tuberculosis infection in their body, but only 10 %  get TB disease.  He added, “The number of TB cases in Hyderabad is high, this also includes patients from various districts and States for the treatment of TB and with Chest Hospital a major center for treating TB patients, here Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis (DRTB) center has been set up along with separate dedicated laboratory with NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test) for better diagnosis and treatment.”

To control the situation, the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), a public health program for early diagnosis and treatment services for TB, has been doubled up in Telangana.  The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) increased the NTEP Drive to make the Telugu State a TB Free State by 2025.

To ensure the State achieves the target, the TRS Government has even formed the State TB Cell.  The IEC Officer Mr. Jitendra S said that under the NTEP program, free diagnosis and treatment services would be provided, including Rs. 500 as additional financial support to TB patients’ bank accounts.  The amount would be transferred under the ‘Nikshay Poshan Yojana’ during their treatment period.

In Telangana, a total of  33 District TB Centers (DTCs), 171 TB Units (TU) (Sub District Level) Hospitals, 550 Designated Microscopy Centers (DMCs), and 34 stand-alone Cartridge-Based Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (CBNAAT) Labs have been set up.

Furthermore, the NTEP program is available in a total of 38 government hospitals and 16 private hospitals in Telangana.
