Gurunatham, Tehsildar Vijaya Reddy’s driver, died on the 5th of November at a hospital in Hyderabad.
Gurunatham sustained serious injuries while trying to save Vijaya Reddy. Vijaya Reddy, the Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) of Abdullahpurmet, was set ablaze by a person identified as Suresh.
On the 4th of November, a shocking incident took place at Vijaya Reddy’s office in Hayathnagar, Ranga Reddy district, Telangana. Suresh entered the office, poured petrol over Vijaya and set her on fire. The incident took place in broad daylight, around 1:30 P.M.
While Vijaya Reddy died on the spot, her driver, who sustained 80 % burns, died at the Apollo DRDO Hospital in Kanchanbagh, Hyderabad, while undergoing treatment.
Gurunatham is survived by a wife who is eight months pregnant and a 2 year old son.
On the morning of the 5th of November, the last rites of Vijaya Reddy were performed in Nalgonda district.
Revenue officers (ROs,) who are angry about the incident, questioned the safety of ROs and staged a protest. On the orders of the Telangana Revenue Employees Service Association (TRESA,) revenue officers across Telangana boycotted their duties for 3 days.
The officers also demanded strict action and severe punishment for the culprit, Suresh.
Suresh also sustained 70 % burns and is in critical condition.
The Rachakonda Police registered a case against Suresh and an investigation regarding the case is underway.
