A lower caste family of four members are surviving in a government built public toilet for years.

In Tirumalagiri village of Mahabubnagar district, Telangana, a widow with her two children and mother in law, are residing in a tiny toilet. Named Sujatha, 30 years old made this bathroom her home after her house collapsed in a heavy downpour in 2017.

Initially, Sujatha, a daily wage labourer was residing at the Government run community hall with her 7 year old daughter, 10 year old son and mother in law. However, after a few days, she was asked to leave the hall with her family. As a last resort, she had to make the toilet her home. They have their luggage in the small area and cook food over a slab, which she kept above the Indian commode. However, the Sarpanch of Tirumalagiri village denied the allegations and said, “It is not true that she was sent away from the community hall. She herself left and wanted to stay separately. The hall did not have doors or windows, but it was still much better than the toilet.”

In the past years, they have seen severe situations of heavy rain, snakes, cold weather and filth. Sujatha said, “The children sleep inside and my mother-in-law and I sleep exterior. I am unable to sleep on days when it rains.”

Despite her repeated appeals and request of financial assistance for a new house, she did not get any help neither from the district collector, nor the State Government.

In an interview with the media, Sujatha said, “Neither sarpanch, nor collector or government official helped her.” The residents of the Tirumalagiri villages also said, the family has been suffering and no government officials stood to helped them.

Recently, a media source posted a video of her condition and facts about how Sujatha and her family are surviving. Soon the video went viral, gaining media attention and support after four years of struggle.

After much outrage over the issue on social media platforms, Ms. Kesili, the Sarpanch of Tirumalagiri village, decided to build a house for Sujatha and her family.

The village Sarpanch recently laid a foundation stone for the construction of her house. The house is expected to be constructed soon.
