Mahendar Reddy, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana, on the 8th of May, announced to release all the vehicles seized during the lockdown and lockdown 2.0.

The Telangana police have registered cases against motorists who came on to the roads in violation of the statute of the lockdown imposed by the state as part of the Coronavirus control measures.

The vehicles that were previously seized were supposed to be handed over to the owners after the proposed lockdown ends.

However, the DGP on the 8th of May, released a notice regarding the same, which is a major relief for those whose vehicles were seized.

The DGP asked the sub inspectors to collect compounding fees from the owners before releasing the vehicles and registering cases under the relevant sections of the law.   According to the issued order, bonds of Rs. 1,000 for two and three-wheeler vehicles and Rs. 2,000 for four-wheeler vehicles had to be executed by the owners.

Speaking about the reason to release the vehicles, DGP Reddy said, “Several vehicles have been seized as a part of enforcement of (the) lockdown in the State.  We have decided to release them as they are huge in number. They cannot be transported to courts and it was also becoming difficult to safeguard them.”

Since the 24th of March, when the lockdown was imposed, the Telangana Police seized as many as 1.3 lakh vehicles in the last two months for violating the lockdown guidelines.

The lockdown is proposed to end on the 29th of May in Telangana.
