The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) may impose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in Telangana.  Despite opposing the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 in the Parliament, the Telangana Government is left with no option but to impose the Act introduced by the Central Government.

B. Vinod Kumar, the Vice Chairman of the State Planning Board, said the State Government’s options are very limited as the Act falls under the Union List of the 7th Schedule of the Constitution.

Clarifying the role of the State Government, Mr. Kumar said, the Chief Minister of states could delay the proceedings of the enforcement of the Act, but cannot refuse to implement it.

Stating the Act is discriminatory on the grounds of religion, Vinod Kumar said the Act is against the Constitution of India as it violates the ideology of India being secular.  He also said the implementation of the Act is an an ill intention of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the Muslim refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

However, an official announcement regarding the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 is yet to be made.

Meanwhile, on the 16th of December, the Supreme Court (SC) agreed to review the petitions filed against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 on the 17th of December.

Stay tuned for further updates.
