The Telangana High Court (HC,) on the 3rd of December, directed the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Government to appoint the State Women Commission by the 31st of December.

The Court also said if the appointment would be delayed, the State Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar would be summoned to the HC for an explanation.

The decision of the Telangana HC came after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by a social activist Ramya Rao.

The Telangana Women’s Commission works for the welfare of the women in the State.

The chairperson for the State Women’s Commission post fell vacant since the completion of the term of Tripurana Venkataratnam in July 2018. Despite repeated criticism, the Telangana Government is delaying the appointment of chairperson for the women commission.

Sunitha Krishnan, chief functionary and co founder of Prajwala, a non governmental organisation (NGO,) took to Twitter and said that it is not a good sign to have a state without a functional women’s commission for more than two years.

Ms. Krishnan said, “If there is no suitable woman within the party then to nominate suitable women with no political affiliation is a good idea.”

Reacting to the tweet, KTR said the issue would be brought to the attention of K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and ensure a fully functional women’s commission.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is likely to conduct a meeting and discuss the matter.
