Telangana Proposes Stricter Laws For Drunk Driving

The Telangana road safety authority, in a recent proposal to union ministry, has pushed for the permissible blood-alcohol-content (BAC) for driving to be reduced by half. In layman terms, 500 ml of beer will be enough to cross the permissible limit.

Just last month, the union cabinet approved the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill 2016, proposing the following hikes in fines for breaking road regulations: five times increase for drunken driving, ten times increase for driving without a seat belt, ten times increase if driving without license and so forth.

These new laws  are especially relevant for drivers in the age group of 18-35, who constitute for about 50% of road accidents. Nearly 6000 cases for drunk driving have been registered in 2016 itself.
