The Telangana State Government disagreed with the suggestion of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB,) of sharing the water and power of the Krishna River with Andhra Pradesh.

Recently, the KRMB, which is trying to resolve the Krishna River issue between the two Telugu States, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, announced sharing of power and water from the Srisailam Reservoir.

Mr. B. Ravikumar Pillai, the KRMB Member Secretary said the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments expressed their readiness for a rule curve with regard to the Srisailam reservoir.  However, after the meeting regarding this on the 5th of December, the Telangana State demanded detailed documentation from the KRMB.

The Telangana State Government led by Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao did not even attend the meeting, clarifying that it was not ready to accept the recommendations of KRMB.

Mr. Rajat Kumar, the Special Chief Secretary (Irrigation) of Telangana, said, “There is no change in Telangana’s stand on the issue of water sharing, power sharing, conveyor storages, and consumptive use of drinking water and accounting of flood waters which were already communicated to the KRMB through several letters in the past.”

Mr. Rajat Kumar said that the Srisailam project was constructed as a hydroelectric project for the exclusive purpose of power generation with the purpose to release 280 tmcft of water to meet drinking and irrigation needs under the Nagarjuna Sagar project in both the states of AP and Telangana.  Therefore, the 50:50 power sharing ratio is not agreeable to Telangana which was in deviation to the earlier orders.

The Telangana State also said, as per recommendations of the KRMB, Andhra Pradesh would be enjoying over 50 to 60 tmcft water, whereas Telangana would only get 34 tmcft water, which would not be enough to meet demands.

It is to be noted, the Krishna River water dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is continuing over the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation work.  The illegal construction and projects on the banks of the Krishna and the Godavari rivers by both the Telangana Government and the Andhra Pradesh Government is a long pending matter, which intensified in the past few months.  The matter intensified with a war of words between the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy led Andhra Pradesh Government and the K. Chandrashekar Rao led Telangana Government, seeking the intervention of the KRMB and the Central Government.
