On the 5th of July, students of degree colleges and engineering colleges staged a protest outside the residence of the Telangana Education Minister.

According to sources, the students called for a protest after the Telangana Education Ministry scheduled degree and engineering from the 5th and the 6th of July for two universities in Telangana.

Osmania University and the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) started the degree and engineering exams for students in July.

Students expressed displeasure over the same and demanded postponement of the exams. In regard to this, thousands of students sat outside the residence of Sabitha Indra Reddy, the Telangana Education Minister. The students demanded that the exams be postponed until they get both the doses of the vaccine against the deadly Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) extended their support to protesting students and asked the State Government to take a decision soon. In regard to the ongoing protest, two NSUI leaders and the President of NSUI in Telangana Venkat Balmoor were booked under charges.

In addition, the Telangana High Court (HC) also refused to direct the State Government to postpone the exams. The High Court on the 5th of July, rejected the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the case and refused to intervene.

Meanwhile, responding to students, Ms. Sabitha Indra Reddy said, the Education Ministry of Telangana assures safety of students while making arrangements for the exams at nearest centres. With this, it could be said, the State Government is determined to continue the exams, which started from the 5th of July.

The matter has created an environment of tension and outrage amongst students, who are yet to be vaccinated. Degree and engineering exams under the JNTU began on Monday, the 5th of July, while the same under Osmania University are scheduled from today, the 6th of July.

Speaking about the reason for postponement, the major reason for their demand is the ongoing second wave of the Wuhan virus and possible third wave, which is said to be dangerous for youth.
