Telangana Water Crisis Sparks Political Showdown

The Congress and BRS are blaming each other as Telangana faces a growing water shortage ahead of the next monsoon.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has linked the crisis to low rainfall, high temperatures and the El Niño weather pattern. Hyderabad’s water board has also urged people to save water as reservoir and groundwater levels fall.

The BRS, led by K. T. Rama Rao (KTR), claims the state government is not using existing irrigation systems properly. On October 25, BRS MLAs visited the Kannepalli pump house and alleged that water from the Godavari River was not being fully used.

The Congress government has blamed the previous BRS government for changes to the Kaleshwaram irrigation project. Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said those changes had affected the state’s ability to manage the current crisis.

The government has also announced plans to repair the Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla barrages by the 2027 monsoon.

With water supplies under pressure, the dispute has raised questions about irrigation planning and how Telangana can protect its water resources.
