Babri Masjid Dispute: The Supreme Court To Commence The Hearing Today

Today, the Supreme Court is likely to commence the hearing of the Babri Masjid dispute. The Babri Masjid case was last heard on the 5th of December 2017. A three judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer. The bench said they would begin the final hearing on the petitions from the 8th of February 2018.

Senior lawyers including Kapil Sibal and Rajeev Dhavan demanded the case be referred to either a 5 or 7 judges bench. Kapil Sibal further requested for the case to be heard in July 2019, after the elections.

The Supreme Court asked the Advocates on Records (AoRs) dealing with the civil appeals against the 2010 judgement of the Allahabad High Court regarding the dispute to ensure all required documents are translated, filed and numbered before the Apex Court Registry. A total of 14 appeals are filed against the Allahabad High Court judgement.

In 2010, a three judge bench of the Allahabad High Court, in a 2:1 majority ruling ordered the land be partitioned equally among the three parties. The three parties include the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lalla
