Union Cabinet Approves Leasing Out Of Jaipur, Guwahati And Thiruvananthapuram Airports

On the 19th of August Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conducted a Cabinet meeting and discussed several issues.

During the meeting, the Union Cabinet approved leasing of three airports of India.

Mr. Modi, who chaired the Cabinet meeting approved the proposal for leasing out three airports, Jaipur, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram, to Adani Enterprises.

The Adani Enterprises won the three airports in an auction in 2019.

Billionaire Gautam Adani led private developer had emerged as the successful bidder in a global competitive bidding conducted by the Airports Authority of India last year.

Prakash Javadekar, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate said, “The upfront Rs 1,070 crore that will come to AAI will be used for developing airports in smaller airports. The other benefit is travellers will get better facilities.”

The statement came during a media briefing after the Cabinet meeting.

The Adani Group has won rights to operate, maintain and develop these airports in a public private partnership (PPP) mode. The company has the right to operate these airports for 50 years.

The leasing out of these airports was part of the original six that were awarded to the Adani Group. Besides these three airports, the Adani groups has three other airports.

The other three airports are of Ahmadabad, Lucknow and Mangalore airports.

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Civil Aviation Minister of India, said, “The Union Cabinet accorded its approval for leasing of three AAI airports namely, Jaipur, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram for operation, management and development to Adani Enterprises Ltd, who is declared as the successful bidder in a global competitive bidding conducted by the Airports Authority of India, for a period of fifty years.”

These projects under PPP would bring efficiency in service delivery, expertise, enterprise and professionalism apart from harnessing the needed investments in the public sector.

Today’s meeting was attended by several union ministers and senior officials of India virtually.
