SC Hears Plea Against Worst AQI Of Delhi, Suggests Two Day Lockdown In City

On the 13th of November, Saturday, the Supreme Court asked about the bad air quality of Delhi. The top court questioned the Delhi Government regarding the worsening situation in terms of Air Quality Index (AQI.)

On Saturday, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) reviewed the AQI situation of Delhi and said the situation to be a serious matter for the people of Delhi. The Apex Court also asked the citizens of Delhi to wear face masks even at home.

The SC bench led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Mr. N.V. Ramana heard a plea filed by a student concerning rising levels of air pollution. Mr. N.V. Ramana said the Delhi Government and the Central Government should consider a two day lockdown to protect citizens from the rising toxicity. In regard to this suggestion, the Supreme Court asked the government to inform the court on Monday, the 15th of November.

Meanwhile, in a notification on Friday, the pollution control board of Delhi said the government and private offices should reduce the use of private transport by 30% and advised the city’s residents to limit outdoor exposure.

The Supreme Court also asked the Central Government to take the necessary steps and tackle the worst air quality situation of Delhi. It is to be noted, on Saturday, the overall air quality in Delhi was “severe” category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 499.

Meanwhile ,the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government advised people to limit outdoor activities and vehicle use by 30 %.

The rising pollution in Delhi is one of the major concerns of the Government of India (GoI) as well as the Delhi Government. Every year, during winters, the City witnesses a rise in the Air Quality Index (AQI) plummets, making Delhi an unhealthy place for people to living.

People suffering from respiratory issues need to take extra care and measures to remain safe, colleges and schools are shut down and smog covers the National Capital.
