The Andhra Pradesh High Court (HC) on the 31st of March, Thursday, announced punishment to 8 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers in Andhra Pradesh.

During the court hearing, the A.P., High Court bench expressed outrage at the non-implementation of orders not to set up village secretariats in schools.  In regard to this, the HC convicted the 8 IAS officers in a contempt case and ordered two weeks of imprisonment.

It is to be noted, the High Court registered a contempt of court case in the wake of issuing orders to construct a village secretariat on school premises.  In regard to this, the HC ordered to cancel the orders, which were not implemented by the IAS officers.  The High Court on Thursday began hearing a contempt of court case for not taking any action on the court orders.

The court, which heard arguments from both sides after the trial, sentenced eight senior IAS officers in the state to serve two weeks of imprisonment.

However, later, when the IAS officers apologized for the orders of non implementation, the Court quashed the two week imprisonment sentence and ordered them to do service programs as punishment.  The eight officers, convicted are, Mr. Vijaya Kumar, Ms. Shyamala Rao, Mr. Gopala Krishna Dwivedi, Mr. Srilakshmi, Mr. Buditi Rajasekhar, Ms. Girija Shankar, Mr. Chinna Veerabhadra and Mr. M.M. Nayak.  They were ordered to carry out one day service activities each month throughout the year.

The HC bench also suggested doing service programs in welfare hostels and bearing one day cost of meals in social welfare hostels for a year.
