In Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district, ornaments worth Rs. 80 lakhs went missing. On the 1st of April, the Kurnool Police confirmed the report saying the silver ornaments were stolen from the police station.
Notably, two years ago, the Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) seized 105 kgs of gold and silver ornaments worth around Rs. 80 lakh along with Rs. 2 lakh cash from two traders during vehicular checks. The vehicle was seized with the ornaments at Panchalinga Check Post, after the owners failed to produce valid documents of the ornaments, which they were allegedly sending to Tamil Nadu. Later, the SEB transferred the case to the Kurnool Taluka Police Station.
The seized ornaments were kept with the Kurnool Police in a safe almirah, under the security of a lady constable. After two years, recently the traders approached the police station for the release of the confiscated items including gold and silver jewellery, the police found that the silver ornaments were missing.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and handling of seized items at police stations and questions major security lapses by the Kurnool Police.
Meanwhile, addressing the media, Mr. Siddharth Kaushal, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kurnool Police Station, assured an investigation and action against the culprits.
SP Siddharth Kaushal ordered a thorough investigation and appointed the town Deputy SP as the investigation officer.
