Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has backed the Election Commission (EC) amid the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He said political parties must respect constitutional institutions and protect public confidence in the democratic process.
In a post on X, Naidu said the clarification issued by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi reaffirmed the credibility of constitutional institutions.
Naidu also said decisions related to the SIR were taken collectively under established procedures. He described attempts to weaken confidence in India’s electoral system for short-term political gains as unfortunate.
His remarks came a day after TDP Lok Sabha floor leader Lavu Srikrishna Devarayalu called for appropriate clarifications and greater transparency from the EC.
The EC has said that decisions on the SIR were taken unanimously by all three commissioners. The clarification came after reports of differences within the poll panel over the electoral roll revision process.
Naidu said leaders across party lines have a shared responsibility to uphold public trust in India’s democratic process.
