Baba Ramdev once again made headlines for his controversial remarks against Allopathic medicines. Recently, Baba Ramdev called Allopathic ‘stupid science’ and allegedly hurt sentiments of many doctors (COVID-19 warriors.)

The statement which went viral on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, created outrage amongst doctors and medical staff fighting the Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus) and other netizens. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook users criticised Baba Ramdev for disrespecting the COVID-19 warriors, who saved several lives with Allopathic medicines.

Later, on the 23rd of May, the Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan stepped into the matter and wrote to the Patanjali founder Baba Ramdev. In the letter, the Union Health Minister called Ramdev’s statement on Allopathic medicines “extremely unfortunate.”

Dr. Harsh Vardhan said, “The statement disrespects the COVID warriors and hurts the sentiments of the country. Your statement on allopathy can break the morale of healthcare workers and weaken our fight against COVID-19 (sic.)” He also asked Baba Ramdev to apologise.

The letter of Mr. Harsh Vardhan came after the Indian Medical Association complained about Baba Ramdev and cited a video circulating on social media as evidence. The IMA wrote a letter to the Union Health Ministry and demanded action against Baba Ramdev. The letter written on the 22nd of May, read, “The IMA demands and resolves if the minister (Harsh Vardhan) is not taking suo moto action, we will be forced to resort to democratic means of struggle to propagate the truth to the common man and knock the doors of the judiciary to get due to justice.”

Meanwhile, after receiving the letter from the Union Health Minister, Baba Ramdev withdrew his remarks and wrote an apology. He said that he never opposed modern medical science and allopathy. In fact, he believe that allopathy has made a lot of progress in the life saving system and the science of surgery and has served humanity.

Baba Ramdev took to his Twitter handle and said, “Hon’ble Minister, I have received your letter. I withdraw my statement, putting to rest the controversy over various medical practices… (jee aapaka patr praapt hua, usake sandarbh mein chikitsa paddatiyon ke sangharsh ke is poore vivaad ko khedapoorvak viraam dete hue main apana vaktavy vaapis leta hoon.)”

However, while apologising, Baba Ramdev also requested some allopathic doctors not to disrespect him by calling Indian medical science, Ayurveda and Yoga, as pseudo science. He said, similar to allopathic doctors, comments against Ayurvedic medicine would hurt the sentiments of crores of people, who believe in Ayurveda.
