With the continuation of the nationwide Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination drive, the Central Government confirmed 2.60 crores unused vaccines.
On the 19th of July, the Government of India, after administering 40 crore vaccine doses, said states and union territories (UTs) have 2.60 (2,60,12,352) doses of the two India made COVID-19 vaccines.
On Monday, the Union Health Ministry said the Centre has provided a total of 42,15,43,730 vaccine doses, both the Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covishield and Bharat Biotech International Private Limited manufactured COVAXIN.
The Union government is committed to accelerating the pace and expanding the scope of COVID-19 vaccination throughout the country. The major reason to speed up the COVID-19 vaccine and urging people to take doses is the safety of Indians. The two doses of approved COVID-19 vaccines (Covishield/COVAXIN) are likely to reduce the death rate due to COVID-19 to 0.40 % compared to the previous 2 %. In addition these vaccine doses would immunize the body and keep it safe at a rate of 75 to 95 % from the deadly virus.
In order to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, the Central Government and the states and UT governments are putting efforts and working to ensure every individual in India, in both rural and urban areas, gets their vaccine doses.
In the next six months, the Central Government would also procure 66 crore doses of the two India made COVID-19 vaccines.
Meanwhile, besides the two India made vaccines, India allowed administering of two foreign vaccines. One is the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, allowed manufacturing by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory, Hyderabad, whereas the second one is the Moderna manufactured by Pfizer (USA,) which is only on import basis.
With this, a total of 4 vaccines against the Wuhan virus are available in government and private hospitals in India.
