After the two India made vaccines, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, the mix of two Indian vaccine is safe and better immunity against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

On the 8th of August, the ICMR study regarding the mixing of Covishield and COVAXIN revealed that, the cockatail of the two vaccines are better for people to fight the virus. The study read, “Such mixed regimens will also help to overcome the challenges of shortfall of particular vaccines and remove hesitancy around vaccines in people’s mind that could have genesis in programmatic ‘errors’ especially in settings where multiple COVID-19 vaccines are being used. However, to conclusively prove these findings a multicentre RCT needs to be carried out.”

The report was based on 18 individuals, won by default took the mix vaccine, first dose of the Serum Institute of India manufactured Covishield and the second dose of the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech Private International Limited manufactured COVAXIN. However, after receiving the doses of two different vaccines, the individuals were reported to have better immunisation programme against COVID-19.

In its study, the ICMR has compared the safety and immunogenicity profile of these persons against that of individuals receiving either Covishield or COVAXIN.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) caution against mixing of vaccines. Previously the World Health Organisation had warned against mixing of vaccines, saying there was very little information on the mix-and-match of vaccines.

The study on the mixing of vaccine doses was started by an expert panel committee of the ICMR from the 30th of July. A detailed report regarding the study, marking it safe was released on the 8th of August.

However, the Central Government is yet to comment on it and allow such practice for the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination drive across India.
